Biographical Information[edit]
John Fox pitched four seasons in the majors during the 1880s. He also played some in the field, usually in the outfield, although he was not a strong hitter.
It was claimed that he was added to the "blacklist" at an 1881 National League meeting, barring him from playing for or against any NL team and that he was reinstated in 1883. However, no supportive evidence has been found. He did spend the 1882 season away from organized baseball, pitching for semi-pro teams around his hometown.
He was regularly accused of "chronic drunkenness", which helped to shorten both his baseball career and his life. His obituary in Sporting Life stated that he died of pneumonia. He was only 34 at the time.
The image on this Baseball Reference page is very likely not him, making him a member of SABR's "missing players" list (a list of players who do not have any known verified photos of them).
