Biographical Information[edit]
John Buckley pitched four games for the Buffalo Bisons at age 20 in 1890. Sporting Life of July 19, 1890 said he did a fairly good job in his debut. He was said to come from the Marlboro, MA club. In his last game, Bert Cunningham was set to pitch but Buckley was put in at the last minute, and he was hit hard. The opposing pitcher, Gus Weyhing, was also hit hard, but the Brooklyn Ward's Wonders won the game. Source: Sporting Life issue of August 2, 1890.
Another player named Buckley was active in the majors at the same time, Dick Buckley, who played across town with the New York Giants. John should also not be confused with a much more recent player of a similar name, John Buck. John Buckley played several seasons in the minors, sometimes playing in the field.
