Biographical Information[edit]

John Boccieri played one season in the minors, hitting .228/.355/.287 for the 1993 Portsmouth Explorers. He served in the US Air Force and took part in both Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He served in the Ohio State legislature from 2001-2008, with breaks for military service. In 2008, he won election to the US Congress, the first Democrat to do so in 58 years. After voting for the Affordable Health Care Act, he said "They say it will cost me my job. But some votes become a matter of conscience, and then you have to put aside what may seem like the clear path." Boccieri did wind up losing his job in the 2010 election.
