Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher John Bedard was taken by the Pittsburgh Pirates 13th overall in the 1970 amateur draft and began his professional career that year at 17 years old. He spent five seasons in the minors, playing until 1974, never advancing beyond Single-A. He was 15-28 with a 5.60 ERA in 73 games (61 starts) overall. Poor control was his downfall—in 1971, he allowed 103 walks and 21 wild pitches in 126 innings between two clubs. The next year, he allowed 67 walks and had 10 wild pitches in 53 innings. In 1973, he tossed 103 innings, allowing 114 walks, while throwing 27 wild pitches for the Charleston Pirates. In his final campaign, he tossed just 17 innings, but walked 7 and threw 5 wild pitches. In 312 career innings, he allowed 293 hits, but walked 301 batters and threw 66 wild pitches. He struck out 238.
