Biographical Information[edit]
"He was a good player..." - Sporting Life obituary of John Ake, May 18, 1887
John Ake's big league career consisted of 13 games with the Baltimore Orioles of the American Association, during the season when there were three competing major leagues in 1884. He drowned in the Mississippi River when a boat he was riding in capsized as a result of the swell of another boat. Although he played only briefly in the majors, he made quite an impression otherwise on observers - his obituaries called him "well-known" and "famous". He was called "a general favorite" in Altoona, and "a good player". His career started in 1881 with an amateur club and he played professionally until his death.
