Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Joey Dettrich played in the Tampa Bay Devil Rays/Rays system from 2007 to 2010. He was taken as the first pick of the 18th round of the 2007 amateur draft, ahead of pitchers Sammy Solis and Taylor Jordan and outfielder Andrew Brown. He was signed by scout Paul Kirsch.

He played for the Princeton Devil Rays/Rays his first three campaigns, going 0-0 with a 27.00 ERA in 1 2/3 innings his first year, 0-1 with a 2.70 ERA in 3 1/3 innings his second season and 5-5 with a 2.92 ERA in 12 starts the third year. He moved up to the Hudson Valley Renegades for 2010 and went 1-4 with a 6.35 ERA in 22 2/3 innings. Overall, Dettrich was 6-10 with a 4.23 ERA in 22 games (16 starts) over four seasons. In 89 1/3 innings, he allowed 82 hits and 30 walks, while striking out 47 batters.

He died in an automobile accident at 25 years old on October 10, 2013.
