Biographical Information[edit]

Joel Finch had one major league at bat, as a pinch hitter in a 16-4 blowout win by the Boston Red Sox against the Oakland Athletics on July 25, 1979. Starter Mike Torrez was inserted in the batting order in the 6th inning when DH Bob Watson moved from DH to 1B; when Torrez's turn to bat came in the bottom of the 7th, Joel batted for him and flew out to right field against Craig Minetto. He then pitched the last two innings of the game, retiring all six batters he faced. 1979 was his only major league season, and he went 0-3, 4.87 in 15 games, including 7 starts. He pitched 57 1/3 innings, giving up 65 hits, walking 25 and striking out 25 also.
