Biographical Information

"In the Yale line-up two of the most noteworthy players are Outfielder Eddie Collins Jr., son of the Baseball Immortal who helped bring fame to Connie Mack's pre-War Athletics, and Pitcher Joe Wood Jr., son of famed "Smoky Joe"* who won 34 games for the Red Sox in 1912. At Colgate another Immortal's son, Pitcher George Sisler Jr., has proved he is a chip off the old bat. At the University of Maryland, scouts have had their eyes on a crack shortstop, Eddie Johnson, son of the Immortal "Big Train." - from Time Magazine, June 5, 1939

The son of "Smoky Joe" Wood, Joe Wood attended Yale University while his father was baseball coach there. He later came up to the majors at age 28 in wartime, appearing in 3 games in the month of May with the Boston Red Sox in 1944 Red Sox, a team managed by Joe Cronin.

Joe pitched seven years in the minors. He threw a no-hitter while in the Eastern League in 1941.

After baseball he became a mink rancher. He lived not far from his father.
