Biographical Information[edit]
You know it's not good for your career as a backup infielder if your nickname is "Horse Belly", as was the case with Joe "Horse Belly" Sargent. Sargent played one season in the major leagues, for the 1921 Detroit Tigers managed by Ty Cobb which finished in 6th place. Sargent was 27 at the time.
He hit .253 in a team whose team batting average that year was .316, leading the league. He played roughly equal numbers of games at second, short, and third.
After the season he was traded to Portland of the PCL. The book Baseball Visions of the Roaring Twenties has a photo of Sargent (and Emmett McCann) with Portland in 1922.
