Biographical Information[edit]
Joe Kutina played two seasons for the St. Louis Browns.
A first baseman, he was used by the 1911 Browns after John Black had played much of the season at first base. With the 1912 Browns he alternated with George Stovall.
For most of 1911 Kutina was with Saginaw, hitting .374. In his minor league career he also played elsewhere in the North - at Fond Du Lac and at Milwaukee. After his major league days he played in Montgomery in 1913.
Joe was featured in an article in the March 11, 1912 issue of The Bridgeport Evening Farmer. He told a story about how he arrived at second base on a play, and the second baseman dropped the ball. As the umpire started to sweep the plate, the ball came to Joe, who threw it into the outfield while the umpire wasn't looking. He and the runner at third then scored. The umpire insisted on putting Joe and the other baserunner back on base. Joe was fined by the club and given a one day suspension.
