Biographical Information[edit]

"I had a hard name to spell or pronounce. It is pure Polish and the American boys up around Elmira, New York, had a way of poking fun at the Poles. Even when they did say 'Jen-e-wich', the boys insisted on putting an 'h' on the end instead of a 'z' and I have had to use it that way ever since. The correct spelling is Genevicz." - Joe Genewich, quoted in The Big Show by McCabe & McCabe

From 1922 through 1930 Joe Genewich appeared as a pitcher in 272 games for the Boston Braves and the New York Giants. He was a sandlot pitcher who came to the majors without pitching in college or the minors. He lost more games than he won in the majors partly because he spent most of his career with Boston teams that were usually doormats. The Giants teams, while good, were not pennant-winners. He also had 12 saves.

Joe Genewich served in the U.S. Army in both World War I and World War II (BN). He was at the Great Lakes Training Station for some of that service.
