Biographical Information

Not to be confused with the umpire Jocko Conlan, Jocko Conlon was an infielder in the majors in 1923.

The book Jocko, about the umpire, contains a paragraph about how Conlan was often confused for Conlon. People would often come up to him and say they had been at Harvard with him. Some refused to believe that the two were not the same person. The umpire Conlan felt that there must have been a strong resemblance between the two (they were both around 5' 7" tall). The book says that Conlan had heard Conlon became a stockbroker in the Boston area. Conlan was, in fact, nicknamed after Conlon. A sportswriter called Conlan "Jocko" because of Conlon, who played in the majors a decade earlier than Conlan.

The Harvard Varsity Club site says that Conlon was twice named the Harvard team's top hitter and once won the award as the best all-around player. He was captain of the team in 1922 and also lettered in football as quarterback. He had previously attended the Phillips Academy in Andover, MA.
