Joan Socarrás debuted in the Cuban Serie Nacional in 2007-2008 and allowed 4 runs in five innings, 9 hits in 19 at-bats, in his lone outing. He played for Cuba when they won Bronze at the 2008 World Junior Championship and threw a complete game win over Taiwan.
In 2008-2009, the tall 19-year-old went 2-4 with a 5.00 ERA. He walked 48 in 45 innings for the Metropolitanos. Joan moved to the Industriales in 2009-2010 but struggled to a 1-5, 6.75 record. He fanned 26 in 32 innings but walked 34 and hit five batters too. He came through when it mattered most, though - in game 7 of the finals, he tossed the final 2 1/3 hitless innings (part of the 8th, the 9th and the 10th) and struck out five. He did walk two but that was it. He got the win that gave the Industriales their 12th Serie Nacional title with his clutch performance.
