He was drafted in the 6th round of the 1969 amateur draft and moved up the ladder in the minors one rung each season, with a winning record at each level except for Double A. With the Richmond Braves in 1972, he went 12-9 with a 3.87 ERA.
In 1974, he was in the minors with the Richmond Braves, where he went 4-2 but pitched in only 9 games due to arm injuries. In 1975 he was traded to the Baltimore Orioles organization (where he was assigned to the Rochester Red Wings), and in 1976 to the New York Yankees organization.
