Biographical Information[edit]

Jim Winn, a first-round pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1981, started the "Save the Pirates" game June 20, 1985. A hard thrower, Jim never had much luck as a Pirate, and gradually lost control on his pitches due to repeated injuries. Winn and the second round pick in 1981, Lee Tunnell, had similar disappointing injury-filled careers, although Tunnell at least made a name for himself in the league. Winn made only 10 starts in his career, all with the Pirates in 1985 and 1986. The latter was his best season, as he went 3-5, 3.58 in 50 games, with 3 saves.

Just before the start of the 1987 season, he was traded to the Chicago White Sox in return for diminutive outfielder John Cangelosi. He set a personal best for wins (4) and saves (6) that season, but his ERA was 4.79 and he was released at the end of spring training in 1988. The Minnesota Twins picked him up and gave him a brief 9-game look that season, but he went 1-0 with an ERA of 6.00 and 33 hits allowed in 21 innings, ending his major league career.

Jim Winn was a standout college pitcher at John Brown University.
