Jim Shelton got his bachelor's degree at St. Edward's University, where he played baseball. He coached there from 1986-1990. He got a master's degree from the University of Texas and coached Southwestern University as assistant in 1990-1992. From 1992-1995, he was graduate assistant at the University of New Mexico, where he earned his doctorate. He returned to Southwestern as assistant coach and became head coach in 2005 after two years as co-head coach. He remained head coach until 2012.
