Biographical Information[edit]

Connecticut native Jim Sheehan spent six seasons in professional baseball from 1936 to 1941.

The 23-year-old catcher made his big league debut with the New York Giants on September 26, 1936. Jim appeared in one game, going zero for four, struck out twice and his major league career was over the same day it started.

Sheehan spent the remainder of his pro career in the minor leagues from 1937 to 1941. He appeared in 513 games with 1,705 at-bats and carried a .275 batting average that included 44 home runs.

Big Jim's most productive year came in 1939. He hit at a .322 clip in 125 games and had 144 base-hits in 447 at-bats for the Fort Smith Giants of the Western Association, helping his team to the league championship.

Sheehan was 28 years old in 1942, too old to be drafted, but worked in the war effort and returned to his home in New Haven, CT, where he worked and lived until his death on December 2, 2003. He was 90 years of age.
