Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Jim Mitchell played for the Batavia Clippers of the New York-Penn League, a Pittsburgh Pirates affiliate, in 1952. He had a very good year, going 14-11, 2.83 in 29 games, including 20 starts, and logging 178 innings. The highlight of his season came on August 20th - but it was a loss. That day, he was involved in a double no-hitter against Frank Etchberger of the Bradford Phillies, the first such game in league history. Unfortunately, he allowed a run on a walk, a sacrifice hit, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly to lose the game, 1-0. The next such game in the minor leagues would only take place on August 23, 1992 - fourty years later - with Andy Carter and Scott Bakkum the two pitchers involved.

He never played professionally after that season as he was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean War. After his service, he settled down in Mansfield, MA where he ran a water purification company.
