Biographical Information[edit]
Jim Gardner played five years in the major leagues. Mostly he pitched, but on occasion he played in the field, usually at third base. Born in Pittsburgh, PA, four of his five years were with the Pittsburgh Pirates. In his most impressive year, he went 8-2 in 1895.
He also had three seasons in the minors. Following his major league career, he went 19-4 with the Toronto Maple Leafs of the Eastern League in 1902.
He twice managed in the minors and worked one National League game as a fill-in umpire in 1899.
Through 2019 there have been 18 major leaguers with the last name Gardner.
