Biographical Information

Jim Campbell was General Manager of the Detroit Tigers from 1963 to 1983. Under his watch, the club won the 1968 World Series. Campbell was previously the Tigers' Director of Player Development and Scouting Director from 1960 to 1962. He would go on to serve as the president of the Tigers from 1984 to 1990. He had begun his career back in 1950 as business manager of the Thomasville Tigers, a Class D affiliate of the Tigers.

Campbell had been a star athlete in high school and attended Ohio State University on a football scholarship. His stay there was interrupted by service in World War II, after which he returned to school but concentrated on baseball as his main athletic activity. He obtained a business degree with the hope of joining baseball ranks on the business side. A businessman from his hometown got him an interview with Tigers GM Al Evans, and he was on his way to fulfill his career aspirations.
