Jim began his coaching career at Louisiana Tech, working as an assistant from 1987-1989. From 1990-1997, he was an assistant coach at the University of New Orleans. In 1998, he became head coach of McKendree University. In his 19 years there, he won 589 games and 8 American Midwest Conference titles. He coached Brian Dinkelman, the first major leaguer to come out of McKendree.
