Biographical Information[edit]
Jerry Phipps was a replacement umpire in the American League in 1978 when the regular umpires staged a one-day strike, and again at the start of the 1979 season, when they went on strike for a longer period. He worked a total of 12 games, all of them at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore, MD. Away from baseball, he was head coach of the basketball team at the Community College of Baltimore, going 360-87 in 14 seasons.
