Biographical Information[edit]

"AKERS A FINE PITCHER. What was more important than winning the game... was the discovery that in Jerry Akers the home team has a twirler who is good... he held the Boston sluggers down as well as most of the recognized stars could have done..." - Sporting Life, May 11, 1912

Albert "Jerry" Akers went 1-1 for the 1912 Washington Senators, a competitive bunch at 91-61. On the day of his final big league appearance, he was dealt to the minor league Montreal Royals in a swap that brought Chick Gandil and his future gamblin' man ways to the bigs. Jerry was born in Shelbyville, IN in 1887. By 18, he was pitching in the minors for the Jacksonville Jacks of Illinois and not Florida. He pitched several years for Jacksonville and a couple for the Dubuque Dubs. His father was a prominent judge named Albert Akers. The family lived in Shelbyville for a number of years but resided mainly in Quincy, IL. When the judge died in 1927, Jerry was a resident of Quincy. A veteran of World War I, Akers died in 1979 at the age of 91.
