Biographical Information

Jeff Murphy reached AA as a player then became a coach.

He hit .312 for Nebraska in 1992 and was the All-Big Eight Conference catcher. The St. Louis Cardinals took Murphy in the 19th round of the 1992 amateur draft, one round after Frank Lankford and one round before Brady Raggio. He hit .264/.342/.433 for the Hamilton Redbirds that summer, fielding .990 at catcher. He split New York-Penn League All-Star catcher honors with Donnie Leshnock. He fielded .993 at C but had 15 passed balls for the 1993 Savannah Cardinals while batting .226/.328/.354 in 98 games, striking out in 105 of 345 AB. He led the South Atlantic League's catchers in fielding percentage. As a backup for the 1994 St. Petersburg Cardinals, he hit .194/.313/.230 in 49 games. In 1995, he batted .180/.301/.270 in 50 games for St. Petersburg and fielded .996 as a backup to Eli Marrero. He split 1996 between the Arkansas Travelers (4 for 7, 2B) and Nashua Pride (8 for 42, 2 2B, 7 BB).

Overall, he had batted .224/.327/.338 with 95 runs and 100 RBI in 268 games and 999 plate appearances as a pro. He fielded .989 in 223 games at catcher, 1.000 in 21 games at 1B and .857 in four games at 3B.

Murphy was bullpen catcher for the Cardinals from 2000-2011, during which they won two World Series. He was bullpen catcher for the 2013 Astros and catching coach for the Oklahoma City RedHawks in 2014 and Fresno Grizzlies in 2015.
