Jared Porter

Biographical Information[edit]

Jared Porter was the General Manager of the New York Mets for a brief but tumultuous period in 2020 and 2021.

Although born in Minnesota, he went to high school in the Boston, MA area and attended Bowdoin College where he played ice hockey. He worked as an intern in the Cape Cod Baseball League before joining the Boston Red Sox in 2004. A protégé of Theo Epstein, he eventually rose to director of professional scouting in 2012. He moved to the Chicago Cubs in 2015, following a similar move by Epstein, and held a similar position there. In 2016 and 2017 he worked for the Arizona Diamondbacks as Senior Vice President and Assistant General Manager.

On December 13, 2020, he was hired by the Mets, replacing Brodie Van Wagenen following the purchase of the team by billionaire Steven Cohen. The Mets felt they had hired the new incarnation of Epstein, but things did not go as expected. Barely a month after his hire, ESPN revealed a story that while with the Cubs, he had sent dozens of unsolicited personal messages to a female reporters, including some of an explicit sexual nature, and he was fired the next day. A very short time later, allegations of a similar nature were leveled against former Mets manager Mickey Callaway, further tainting the organization. Major League Baseball also did not take this kindly, as Porter was banned from holding employment until the end of the 2022 calendar year. He was replaced on an interim basis by his deputy, Zack Scott, who would also get himself in trouble for his off-field behavior in short order.

In addition to his having played college hockey, he has family ties to Pittsburgh Penguins coach Michael Sullivan and to executive Brian Burke.
