Biographical Information

Infielder James Washburn had a playing career that spanned from 1913 to 1932. Though he posted notable numbers earlier in his career, including 14 triples for the Wichita Jobbers in 1919, it was from 1921 to 1925 and later, in 1930 and 1931, that he had his best seasons.

He was with the Wichita Witches in 1921 and 1922. In the former campaign, he hit .319 with 30 home runs, 46 doubles, 11 triples, 219 hits, 377 total bases and a .550 slugging percentage in 168 games; he led the Western League with 170 runs scored. The next year, he hit .337 with 23 home runs, 49 doubles, 202 hits, 338 total bases and a .563 slugging mark in 154 games. He fell to .294 for the Reading Keystones in 1923, but still hit 11 home runs and 12 triples in 142 games. With the Tulsa Oilers in 1924, he had a campaign for the ages, batting .375 with 48 home runs, 53 doubles, 184 runs scored, 247 hits, 458 total bases and a .696 slugging percentage in 169 games. He led the Western League in homers, runs scored and total bases. In 1925, with the San Antonio Bears, Washburn batted .328 with 16 home runs in 107 games. His next offensive outburst came in the early '30s with the El Paso Texans. In 1930, he hit .372 with 12 home runs, 16 triples and a .621 slugging mark in 106 games and in 1931, he hit .320 in 104 games. He played one more season in 1932, then called it quits.

He also managed El Paso.
