Biographical information[edit]

Pitcher James Reeves was drafted in the 10th round of the 2015 amateur draft by the New York Yankees, out of The Citadel, which he had attended from 2012-2015. He began his pro career in 2015 with the Staten Island Yankees of the New York-Penn League, going 1-1, 3.08 in 13 games as a reliever.

From 2013 to 2019, he pitched at various levels in the Yankees organization, reaching AAA for one game in 2018. Most of his work was in AA with the Trenton Thunder of the Eastern League, where he appeared all four seasons. In 2019, he was 7-2, 1.87 in 33 games, all in relief, between the Class A Tampa Yankees and Trenton, notching 83 strikeouts in 67 1/3 innings. Like most minor league players, he saw his 2020 season wiped out by the Coronavirus pandemic, when he should have been getting an extended look in AAA. On January 6, 2021, he was traded to the San Diego Padres in return for OF Greg Allen.
