Jam
To jam a hitter is to pitch a ball closely enough to his wrists that he has little room to move the bat effectively.
Pitchers are also said to "be in a jam" when they are in a particularly tough spot with runners on base. If they manage to escape the predicament, they are said to have "worked out of the jam".
