Biographical Information[edit]
Jake Wells was in the big leagues during two years. In 1888 he was a teammate of the Big Four, while in 1890 he was a teammate of Hall of Famer Tommy McCarthy. He spent multiple seasons managing in the minor leagues, from either 1894 or 1895 to 1899. He was president of the Virginia League for part of 1900 and then from 1906-1909. After his baseball career, he got involved with the show business and operated his own theaters and invested in producing various silent films. On March 16, 1927, he shot himself in the head after telling a friend "my life isn't worth living anymore." Following his death, he was interred at St. Mary Cemetery in Norfolk, VA.
