Biographical Information[edit]

Jake Caulfield hit pretty well for a shortstop in his one season in the majors as a 28-year-old rookie in 1946. On a Philadelphia Athletics team that hit .253, Jake hit .277/.306/.362 in 94 at bats (44 games), although he had few walks and only average power. His defense was below par, as he made 8 errors in 31 games at short and his range was below average. The "regular" shortstop that year was Pete Suder, although Suder played all over the infield. The next year, Eddie Joost became shortstop and Suder became second baseman. Jake attended the University of San Francisco from 1937-1940, and was with the Oakland Oaks in 1943.
