Biographical Information[edit]

Jake Boyd had apparently pitched for the Roanoke Magicians before coming to the majors with the Washington Senators at age 20 late in the 1894 season. He was 0-3, but returned in 1895 for 15 more pitching appearances with the Senators, going 2-11 (although he hit .270 as a batter). His hard luck as a pitcher continued in 1896 with the Senators, going 1-2 before he went to the minor league Portsmouth Browns, having considerably more luck with them in posting an ERA of 2.03 and a record of 15-8. He also hit .265 with Portsmouth, which wasn't terrible for a pitcher. He continued to play in the minors in 1897-1898. During his major league stint, he appeared in more games in the field, in the outfield and at second base, than as a pitcher.

"Win Mercer, Otis Stocksdale, Varney Anderson and Jake Boyd, of the Senators, are four of the best-batting pitchers in the business . . ." - Sporting Life, June 8, 1895 issue
