Biographical Information[edit]

Jack Riley was a college coach.

Riley led the Northwest Conference in scoring in basketball three straight years (twice All-American) and was a three-time All-Conference outfielder. [1] He turned pro and in 1960 hit .259/.329/.310 as a regular outfielder for the Salem Senators. He fell to .202/.275/.211 in 34 games for the Salem Dodgers in 1961. He was a teacher and assistant coach (and head basketball coach) at Jefferson High School [2] in the offseasons, but had to make a choice when teaching conflicted with Spring Training and retired. He stayed at Jefferson through 1968.

Riley was head coach of Lower Columbia College from 1969-1972 and Oregon State University from 1973-1994, going 613-411-5 at OSU to set a school record for wins. [3] He won Pacific-10 Conference North Coach of the Year four times. [4] He coached seven future major leaguers at OSU, most notably Steve Lyons.
