Biographical Information[edit]
Catcher Jack Mele played in the Brooklyn Dodgers system in 1943, 1946, 1947 and 1949. Of note, he hit .305 in 463 at-bats for the Santa Barbara Dodgers in 1946 and .358 in 106 at-bats for the Billings Mustangs in 1949. Overall, he hit .288 in 292 games.
He served in the Army Air Force as a bombardier and radio navigator during World War II.
In 1946, he managed Santa Barbara for the latter part of the season, replacing Jack Knight. After his playing career ended, he coached and taught at Whittier High School before becoming principal and served as a long-time city councilman of Whitter and two years as mayor.
