Biographical Information[edit]

Jack Gilligan made his major league debut with the St. Louis Browns in 1909 after pitching most of that season with the Vancouver Beavers and going 14-12. He was touted as being a future star:

"Gilligan . . . was effective, but somewhat wild. It will be surprising if this youngster does not turn out to be a very classy pitcher. Control and experience seem to be about all he lacks. . . "Slat" had a good day, except when he was hit in the slats by Gilligan, who knows no speed limit. . . Gilligan is by far the most promising of (the) recruits to date." - Sporting Life, September 25, 1909

Gilligan did come back with the Browns in 1910, but he ended up spending half the season with the Milwaukee Brewers of the American Association, and never came back to the majors. However, he pitched through 1919, sometimes with considerable success, such as when he was 11-7 for the Minneapolis Millers in 1913 and 13-8 for the Des Moines Boosters in 1915.

Jack had a long life, living to the age of 95.
