Jack Cook Field is named for former Marshall University baseball player Jack Cook who was a captain for Marshall's baseball team in 1949 and later was named Marshall's interim baseball coach in 1955. He then served as head coach from 1967 to 1989. During his time coaching the Herd, Cook compiled an overall record of 422-344-3.
Marshall University was in dire need for a stadium as they had not had a true home stadium prior to the 2024 season. Prior to the building of Jack Cook Field, Marshall's baseball team would split home games between three fields; Kennedy Center Field (for non-conference games) which was located at the local YMCA, Appalachian Power Park which is located in Charleston, WV, some 50 miles from the campus (2006-2018, 2023), and some select games at Linda K. Epling Stadium.
The university purchased land near the campus in 2018 to begin this project.
The Appalachian League also announced that a new team will begin playing at Jack Cook Field in the Summer of 2024.
