Biographical information[edit]

Pitcher JJ Goss was a supplemental first round pick in the 2019 amateur draft, selected by the Tampa Bay Rays with the 36th overall pick in Competitive Balance Round A. He was the Rays' second pick in the draft, following SS Greg Jones, taken with the #22 pick. Goss had been playing at a high school in the suburbs of Houston, TX prior to the draft. His signing bonus with the Rays was reported to be %2.05 million.

He began his professional career in 2019 with the GCL Rays, making 8 starts in 9 appearances but logging just 17 innings, during which he went 1-3, 5.82 in spite of a 16/2 K/W ratio. He then lost a year of development by being forced to sit out the 2020 season when the minor leagues were shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic. He then hit a further bump in 2021, when shoulder issues limited him to just 10 1/3 innings, once again on the lowest rund of the minor league ladder, with the FCL Rays. He went 1-0, 6.10, but once again demonstrated outstanding control with 10 strikeouts and no walks. The good news was that the shoulder issue did not require surgery and that he entered 2022 fully healthy.
