Izumi Takayanagi pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball.

Takayanagi played for Nihon Tsuun in the industrial leagues after high school. He was on the Japanese national team in the 1987 Asian Championship, helping them to a Silver Medal. A first-round pick of the Kintetsu Buffaloes in the 1987 NPB draft, he was 6-6 with a 3.44 ERA and 1.08 WHIP as a rookie in 1988. He fell to 3-5, 5.61 with a .318 opponent average in 1989. He pitched in two games (1 H, 1 K, 1 IP) in the 1989 Japan Series, which Kintetsu lost to the Yomiuri Giants in 7 games. He was 3-5 with a 5.19 ERA in 1990.

The Saitama native had a 7-5, 3.76 record in 1991 and 9-8, 3.93 in 1992. His 16 homers allowed in '92 tied Atsunori Ito for 6th in the Pacific League. He was 2-1 with a 4.91 ERA and a 2.00 WHIP in 1993. He spent the next two years in the minors and then in a year in the minors with the Chiba Lotte Marines before retiring. He had gone 29-30 with a 4.27 ERA, .276 opponent average and 1.38 WHIP in 119 games (91 starts); he struck out 293 in 571 2/3 IP.
