Biographical Information

Infielder Irv Bartling spent five seasons in professional baseball from 1936 to 1940. He spent three seasons in the minor leagues (1936-1938) before being called up to the Philadelphia Athletics for a late season look in 1938. Irv was with the Williamsport Grays of the Class A Eastern League, where he appeared in 121 games and hit at a .300 average, when he received his call to the big leagues and played his first game on September 8, 1938. He would appear in fourteen games with 46 at-bats and 8 hits for a .174 average and play his last game in the big leagues on September 29, 1938. He spent two more seasons (1939-1940) in the minor leagues, with four different teams, and left the game after the 1940 season. He appeared in 571 games and hit for a .278 average and fielded his infield positions at a .939 percentage. Bartling returned to his native Michigan where he worked and lived until his death at the age of 58 on June 12, 1973, at his home in Westland, MI.
