Biographical Information[edit]
Ira Errett Rodgers was a college coach.
Rodgers scored or passed for 66 touchdowns at West Virginia and was All-American in football in 1919. He led the nation with 147 points as a senior and set a school record with 313 career points. He was also captain of WVU's basketball and baseball teams. The Philadelphia A's offered him a contract, but he shunned the world of pro sports. He was a coach and teacher at WVU after graduating. As the baseball coach, he was 204-208-3 from 1921-1943 and again in 1946. Among his players were a number of future major leaguers: Johnny Gorsica, Babe Barna, Jim Fridley, Herman Layne and John Woods. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1953.
