Biographical information

In-sik Kim has been a long-time manager in South Korea and guided the country to a Bronze Medal in the Olympics.

Kim played for the amateur Hanil Bank from 1969-1972, a decade before professional baseball came to South Korea. He coached his old Baemoon High School from 1973-1977, then moved to Sangmoon High School for three years. He was the head coach at Dongguk University from 1982-1985. He moved into the professional ranks in 1986 when he became a coach for the Haitai Tigers. He was with Haitai from 1986-1989, the Ssangbangwool Raiders from 1990-1992, the Doosan Bears from 1995-2003 and the Hanwha Eagles from 2004-2009. Along the way, he led Doosan to Korean Series titles in 1995 and 2001.

Kim was a coach of the South Korean national team that stunned Japan to win Bronze in the 2000 Olympics. He then piloted Korea to a Gold Medal in the 2002 Asian Games. He took South Korea to the semifinals in the 2006 World Baseball Classic, widely exceeding expectations in the first World Baseball Classic.

Kim managed South Korea in the 2009 World Baseball Classic; despite his success in 2006, he was the third option after 2008 Korean Series champion manager Sung-keun Kim and 2008 Olympics Gold Medalist manager Kyung-moon Kim both declined the role. Kim piloted Korea to a second-place finish in the event behind Japan.
