Biographical Information[edit]

Hyuk Kwon is a left-handed pitcher for the Samsung Lions who has played for the South Korean national team.

Kwon debuted in 2002 with Samsung, allowing 11 hits and 6 runs in 4 innings and going 0-1 in two games. In 2003, he went 3-2 with a 5.26 ERA in 23 outings. He continued to improve in 2004, going 3-3 with a 4.78 ERA and 78 strikeouts in 81 innings at age 20. He did not appear in 2005.

In 2006, Kwon's only pitched 12 games for the Lions, with a 4.50 ERA and no decisions. The next year was the fifth in a row in which he lowered his ERA, now down to 2.79 in 60 games pitched. He won 7, lost just once, struck out 100 in 77 1/3 IP and allowed only 47 hits (2 home runs). Kwon joined the Korean national team for the 2007 Asian Championship, in which he threw 2/3 of a scoreless inning against Japan and one shutout frame against the Philippines. He allowed two hits and two strikeouts during the tournament, in which South Korea finished second.

Kwon remained with South Korea for the 2008 Final Olympic Qualification Tournament and again did well, allowing 2 hits and no runs in 2 2/3 innings while striking out three. Through half of the 2008 KBO season, it appears that Kwon might lower his ERA for a 6th straight season as he has only a 1.33 ERA; in 27 innings, he has allowed 17 hits and he has three saves.

Kwon made three appearances in the 2008 Olympics, totaling only 1 1/3 IP. He allowed no hits and one walk while striking out two and aided South Korea in winning Gold.
