Biographical Information[edit]
Hughie Hearne was born in Troy, NY, a hotbed of early baseball, and grew up to play three years in the majors.
In his first two years with Brooklyn, he struggled for playing time against two veterans. In 1901, the regular catcher was 37-year-old Deacon McGuire while 34-year-old Duke Farrell was the # 2 catcher. In 1902 Hearne became the regular and Farrell the back-up. In 1902 Lew Ritter became the regular catcher.
After his major league days, he went on to play seven seasons for the minor league Baltimore Orioles.
Through 2019, the only other major leaguer with the last name Hearne has been Ed Hearne, who appeared in the majors in 1910.
