Biographical Information[edit]
Hugh Poland played 83 games in the majors spread out over five seasons. A catcher, he had the bulk of his major league at-bats for the Boston Braves in 1943.
Hugh was the second major leaguer to come out of Western Kentucky University, where he attended in 1932-1934. He began in the minors in 1935 with Huntington, hitting .299. His minor league career lasted through 1949, when he was player-manager for Trenton.
Poland managed the 1940 Cambridge Canners, 1949 Trenton Giants, 1950 Sioux City Soos, 1951 Ottawa Giants, 1952-1954 Nashville Volunteers, 1959 San Francisco Giants entry in the Florida Instructional League and 1960 Giants club in the Arizona Instructional League.
Poland was a scout for the New York/San Francisco Giants from 1955 to 1983.
