Long identified as simply J. O'Neill, Hugh O'Neill's first name was found in archived issues of the New York Mercury in 2008. Little else is known about this pitcher who played in 5 games for the 1875 Brooklyn Atlantics of the National Association. In 2017, his birthday was found among those of a list of players published by the Topeka Commonwealth newspaper.

His last name is also spelled "O'Neil" in some sources.
