Biographical Information

Horacio Ramirez played alongside Coco Crisp at Inglewood High School.

The Atlanta Braves drafted Ramirez in the 5th round of the 1997 Amateur Draft out of Inglewood. Ramirez gradually worked his way through the Braves minor league system and made his major league debut in 2003. He spent four years with the Braves before being traded to the Seattle Mariners for Rafael Soriano. Ramirez completed the major league portion of his playing career with the Los Angeles Angels in 2011. Over eight seasons he had a 40-35 record with a 4.65 ERA. In 2012 he played briefly in the Chicago Cubs minor league system before moving to South Korea to play for the KIA Tigers. Ramirez returned to North America in 2013 and played in Mexico.

Ramirez returned to the Braves in 2014-2015 and served as a major league assistant coach. He was slated to return in 2016, but opted to resurrect his pitching career instead. Ramirez pitched in Mexico through the 2022/2023 winter season. In the 2019 Premier 12, he pitched for the Mexican national team; he lost to Shota Imanaga of Japan and had a 10.38 ERA for the event; only Justin Kelly was higher for Mexico but they won a spot in the 2020 Olympics.

After retiring, Ramirez worked as the pitching coach for the 2023 Burlington Sock Puppets in the reconstituted Appalachian League where his his team led the circuit in strikeouts. He only stayed with the Sock Puppets for one year before being rehired by the Braves for their FCL Braves pitching coach position in 2024. In response to his departure, the Director of Player Personnel of the Appalachian League Justin Morgenstern noted that “Horacio was an incredible asset to the Appalachian League ... He did a tremendous job as Burlington’s pitching coach and served as a mentor to the young men on his staff. No one is surprised to see him back with a Major League organization. It is where he belongs.”[1]

In his brief coaching career, Ramirez also has international coaching experience. He was the pitching coach for Mexico in the 2023 World Baseball Classic. During the 2023/2024 winter season, he also worked as the pitching coach for the Sultanes de Monterrey of the Mexican Pacific League.
