Biographical Information[edit]
The second-round draft selection of the Orix Blue Wave in the 1998 NPB draft, Hidetaka Kawagoe had his best season as a rookie, going 11-8 with a 2.85 ERA in the 1999 Pacific League. He was fourth in the league in ERA and tied for his club's lead in wins, but Daisuke Matsuzaka was the clear choice for Rookie of the Year. He won Silver with the Japanese national team in the 1999 Asian Championship. Slipping to 8-6, 3.79 in 2000, he collapsed in 2001 to a 1-5, 6.07 season. He then became a serviceable, but not great starter, the next few years with campaigns of 3-15, 4.92; 0-3, 4.76; 7-9, 4.17 and 6-8, 3.66. He was the ace of a poor Orix staff in 2004 and led the club in wins and in 2005 was the #2 starter behind Jeremy Powell.
