Biographical Information[edit]

"Burnett, an amateur, was given a trial by the home team and did well." - Sporting Life, July 4, 1888, about the June 26 game in which Burnett batted fifth in the lineup

"The first one to be tried was Burnett, late of Evansville, who played out in the field and who did astounding things with the bat but who was so awful in fielding at Cincinnati that he had to be laid aside to recover his nerve." - Sporting Life, September 28, 1895

Hercules Burnett truly was a Hercules in the majors. In 21 at-bats spread out over two big league looks, seven years apart (1888 and 1895), he slugged .714. In 1895, his 17 at-bats included a triple and two home runs (belting one in his last career at bat), for a slugging percentage of .882. He managed at Montgomery in 1903.
