Biographical information[edit]

Henry Owens was a backup catcher in college and went undrafted. He planned to go to medical school, but was signed by scout Delvy Santiago for the Pittsburgh Pirates and immediately made a pitcher. He made his pro debut in 2001 for the GCL Pirates.

Owens was with Team USA in the 2006 American qualifying tournament for the 2008 Olympics. He had a 6.35 ERA but also saved three games. Owens missed 2008 with a shoulder injury. He failed a test for performance-enhancing drugs that year as well, earning him a 50-game suspension for 2009.
