Biographical Information[edit]
Harry Stevens was a British born entrepreneur who made his fortune on the changing tastes of baseball fans.
Stevens founded Harry M. Stevens Inc., a stadium concessions company. In the mid-1890s, he expanded to New York City after meeting with John Montgomery Ward, then-manager of the New York Giants. By 1900, Stevens had secured contracts to supply refreshments at several major-league ballparks across the country. He replaced the traditional treats of ice cream and lemonade with sausages on a roll (hot dogs), peanuts broken down into individual sized bags, and soda pop. By the time of his death, Stevens was a millionaire.
