Biographical Information

Harry Howell had the misfortune of pitching for very poor teams for the majority of his career. Despite posting the 86th-best ERA of all-time (through April 2013), Howell's winning percentage was a meager .473. In 1905, pitching for the St. Louis Browns, he went 15-22, despite posting the sixth-best ERA in the American League with a 1.98 mark. The Browns went only 54-99 that season. Relying on unadjusted ERA is somewhat deceptive as this was the heart of the Deadball Era; his 109 ERA+ was certainly good though.

He was also a position player in 1902, appearing all over the field (except catcher), while still being the team's #1 pitcher.

He umpired a few one-off games in the AL from 1904 to 1907, then was a full-time umpire in the Federal League in 1915.
